SMOOTHIES

What is a smoothie?

A smoothie is a delicious and healthy drink made up of fruit that’s been blended with fruit juice, milk or yogurt. So not only do smoothies taste great – they’re really good for you too. Packed with all the vitamins and nutrients you get from fresh fruit, they make the perfect drink, day or night. What’s more, all you need to make them is some basic kitchen equipment and a little imagination.
A freshly made smoothie. You can smell it miles away. I take the first slurp, and my whole body is exhilarated in joy. I feel happy to be alive.
A smoothie is essentially a blended fruit drink and is made using a food blender or smoothie maker (a smoothie maker is just a blender with a tap on the front). Smoothies have rocketed in popularity in the last 10 years and are now a common and regular part in the diets of millions of households.

Smoothies benefit us in a different way from juices because smoothies contain the whole fruit, not just the juice. This means that smoothies contain the fibrous matter of the fruit and as such are good sources for our required dietary intake of fibre. Fibre helps aid digestion.
They're a fast nutritious food that's rejuvenating to both mind and body, whilst being flavourful and filling.

Nutritious and fruiticious

As most people do not eat enough fresh fruit daily, a smoothie is an ideal way of getting the vitamins and minerals necessary for the good functioning of the body.

The vitamins and minerals are absorbed more quickly and efficiently, as the fruit is presented in a more digestible form.

Many fruits besides orange contain vitamin c. This vitamin is necessary for healing the body from ordinary cuts to infections such as the common cold.

The smoothie which is made from fresh fruit is full of natural enzymes which not only aid digestion but are vital for many other functions.

Pectins are present in fruit and it is thought these can reduce the risk of heart disease. Flavonoids are also believed to reduce the risk of cancer.

Cooking or pasteurising substantially reduces these naturally occurring enzymes, so a smoothie is better for you.

The body cannot store vitamin c or b-complex, yet the body requires a minimum
amount every day. It is recommended you consume at least 5 portions a day of fruit or vegetables.
A glass of Smoothie counts as 1 portion of the daily recommended amount. Delicious!
